DID YOU SAY MIGNONISME?
The story behind this collaboration with a big X started in 2020.
While isolated in the countryside, Philippe Katerine experimented with the biggest playground of all: everyday life. Whether taking inspiration from the kitchen or in the garden, his children’s toys or meals prepared by Julie (Depardieu), he had fun creating things with the objects he had to hand.
Sketches, portraits, salt dough models, ravioli with a smile, scrabble letters arranged on a plate... The artist assembles, designs, sculpts and photographs, as he makes his return to plastic arts, which he had left for the world of music.
The aim is not to create meaning, but rather to take a fresh look at the world, reinvent it and have fun. This philosophy has always inspired Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche. It was only natural for Philippe Katerine to choose to reveal and exhibit his “Mignonisme” (cuteism) here.
“Mignonisme is everywhere, it’s easy to find. If you assemble two objects that shouldn’t be together, you already have a story: the present, past and future.”
Philippe Katerine
AN EVENT
From 26 February to 24 April 2022, le Mignonisme by Philippe Katerine offers a truly extraordinary programme. A series of experiences and products that look good, do good and make people feel good. On all floors.
Under the central skylights and in all the windows along rue de Sèvres, the artist’s Monsieur Rose, the cute pop figure who likes to keep his distance, welcomes visitors in the form of giant bubblegum-pink resin sculptures.
On the second floor, in minimalist surroundings, a boutique exhibition is presenting over one hundred unique works by Philippe Katerine; continuing his exploration with plastic arts, the artist creates pieces with everything that he has to hand (his children’s toys, the nature and animals around him, play dough, gouache paint, ravioli from family meals, and much more). In this space, Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche is also presenting a collection of clothes and goodies designed by the artist with a sense of humour (and made in France): plates with silhouettes of his loved ones and inspirations (Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu, and more); wallpaper, hooded sweatshirts, jackets, bucket hats, limited edition garlands (150 numbered pieces), tote bags, telephone cases and postcards bearing the face of Monsieur Rose. And finally, the mignoniste playlist: a maxi single composed exclusively for the exhibition with 4 unique tracks (La Sauterelle (grasshopper), La Sardine (sardine), Le Gendarme (firebug) and La Langoustine (lobster) – a bestiary) and an illustrated cover... It's sure to be a hit!
THE EXHIBITION CATALOGUE
To capture it all: the Mignonisme book will contain all the texts and works produced by Philippe Katerine. This unclassifiable book, featuring “Autoportrait Au Ballon” (Self-portrait on a balloon) on the cover and cute round corners reminiscent of children’s books, is published by éditions hélium and conveys a cheerful philosophy: “Simply open your eyes: you can always find something cute somewhere. It’s a matter of perception. ” 500 copies of this future collector’s item have been printed with a poster cover for Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche and will be used as the exhibition’s catalogue.
THE PROGRAMME
Last but not least, the designer-composer-singer will bring his voice to the department store, in the tannoy announcements that mark the different moments of daily life at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche.
As part of the Les OFF events, Frères Philippe (Philippe Eveno, a contributor to the exhibition, and Philippe Katerine) will give two concert performances on 1 and 2 March.
